The highlight of the MEF 2021 online exhibition is an online virtual tour led by the top executive committee members who have contributed to MEF for a long time. For the grand finale of MEF 2019, "panel talk" was newly selected instead of the annual panel discussion. Mr. Susumu Kaminaga will take a role of the moderator, and proceed the discussion with two great panelists- Dr. Kurt Petersen (Band of Angels, Silicon Valley: the grand person in MEMS industry) and Dr. Franz Laermer (Bosch: the inventor of the "Bosch Process").　The theme has decided as "Entrepreneurship".

There should be entrepreneurship among various companies. Mr. Kaminaga and two legendary persons will discuss about both entrepreneurship in venture companies and in large companies from various angles.

It is important not to just develop new sensor technologies but to create a new business model by establishing a system to utilize the information obtained by sensors. With the value of information obtained by sensors, you can make a big change in society by forming collaborative partnership among sensor manufacturers, system builders, and users. Technology innovation resolves global issues such as aging society, medical and healthcare, aging infrastructure, food production, environmental conservation, disaster prevention /mitigation, clean energy, etc. The most important key factor is to eliminate walls enhancing collaboration between industry, academia and government, collaboration between large enterprises and small and medium enterprises and venture companies, cooperation among companies, cooperation across borders, etc.

In this forum, we expect to discuss both aspects of the trends of innovative technologies and of the mechanisms necessary for implementing new technologies in society. For that purpose, the grand finale annual panel discussion looks back to the past ten years of MEMS industries, and explore the next ten years driven by MEMS.

Vol 2 - AI Application for MEMS and Optical Communication Technologies

"AI and MEMS" is characterized by the fact that the AI-based IoT system is accelerated by intelligent MEMS devices. Therefore, it can be said to "AI by MEMS". On the other hand, "AI and Optical communication" is featured that performance improvement of optical communication components and systems is driven by AI. In this sense, it can be said that "Optical communication innovation by AI". In this letter, the author will introduce recent developments in utilization of AI in these MEMS technologies and optical communication fields.

The difference between MEMS and optical communication is that the MEMS is called as an “active AI device” which can autonomously work as a sensor or actuator whereas optical communication device whose function is required as a “passive AI device”.
